The 1961 Lincoln Continental was make or break for the Lincoln brand. Robert McNamara, Ford’s VP for vehicle operations, decided Lincoln had lost too much money for far too long and that the smart thing would be to close down the entire Lincoln division. But McNamara was persuaded to give Lincoln one last chance using a Ford Thunderbird design as the basis. Upon release, it was a huge hit, winning awards and increasing market share of 60 percent.
