The classic Black Cab hits the streets

The black London Taxi is a famous symbol of Great Britain the world over. The Austin FX4 took its first London fare in 1958 after replacing the Austin FX3. Over 75,000 FX4s were built between 1958 and 1997 and the classic taxi design is still a familiar sight in the capital today.

The FX4 was designed by Austin in collaboration with Mann and Overton (a taxi dealership) and Carbodies (a coachbuilder) Of course the design had to allow the new model to still make the unfeasibly tight turning circle of 25ft (7.6m), which is a famous requirement of London’s Black Cabs. One key consideration at the design stage was to ensure that the outer panels, so vulnerable in the cut and thrust of London traffic, could easily be replaced; the rear wings, and the outer sills, were bolt-on items, while the doors were constructed to facilitate the replacement of the outer skins. The new, updated model remained in continuous production
